Asian Fusion BBQ Party: Dessert

Panna Cotta doesn’t have to be that gelatinous blob served at wanna-be gourmet restaurants that you pretend to love because it’s European and luxurious. This version is very Italy-meets-Asia thanks to an infusion of tropical fruit flavors. Break one out to sex up a barbecue menu or to show up your great aunt at her next high tea. Part 4 of 5.

Panna Cotta used to remind us of Italian vacations and old-lady moustaches (it’s a long story). Still, we loved the taste and decided to rethink the recipe with an Asian twist by incorporating the tropical fruit flavors of oranges and kiwis. Prepped in mini quiche dishes the day before our barbecue, the best part was simply pulling them out of the fridge, chilled and ready-to-serve. We made a few extra to put under our arm pits for a refreshing cooling action while manning the grill (just seeing if you’re still reading).

Save gelato and rice krispies for the kids' clown party. Break this bad boy out for a light, sweet ending to a hot summer day.

Orange Blossom Panna Cotta with Kiwi-Sake Sauce

Adapted from the kitchn

  • 3 tablespoons cold water
  • 1/2 tablespoon unflavored gelatin
  • 3/4 cup half-and-half
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon orange blossom water
  • 3 kiwis: 2 peeled and chopped, 1 peeled and sliced in rounds
  • Juice of 1/2 lime
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 cup sake
  1. Place water and gelatin in a small bowl, let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Bring half-and-half, milk and sugar to a boil over medium heat, stirring frequently until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Remove from heat, stir in gelatin and orange blossom water. Pour into 4 mini quiche dishes or ramekins and place in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  4. Place chopped kiwis, lime juice, sugar and sake in a blender or food processor and pulse until combined.
  5. Remove panna cotta from refrigerator and drizzle kiwi-sake sauce over each dish, then place a kiwi slice on top to serve.
