World Cup Cocktailing. 9 Cities. 9 Parties.
If you’re jet-setting to see the games live, hit up one of these spots or plan your own FIFA-inspired fête using one of these drink hubs for cocktail menu inspiration.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s picture on the cover of Vanity Fair inspired us do several unmentionable activities, as well as put together a round-up of party places in each of the cities hosting football’s biggest tournament. We’ve got 9 recos, each perfect for sipping while keeping your eye on the abs, er, games.

A shot to inspire your cocktail menu — warning, if a bartender attempts to put all of this into your drink, run to the corner store for a cold one, instead. Photo: Seven on Kellner
Bloemfontein: Seven on Kellner
With flamed zest garnishes and caramel tequilas, Seven on Kellner makes drinks as sexy as the ballers.
Cape Town: Asoka
When in South Africa, drink the liquor of the locals … the Fish Eagle Brandy Sour: Brandy served short over ice with fresh lemon, a dash of Angostura Bitters and a little sweetness to balance.
Durban: Bean Bag Bohemia
Up your energy level to heckling levels with the Roobios Bull: Stroh rum, Red Bull, lemon, Bols blue and grenadine.
Johannesburg: The Polo Lounge at The Westcliff Hotel
Chill out in one of the trendiest bars in Johannesburg with a Whitaker Cocktail: mandarin vodka, apricot brandy, Campari, fresh orange juice and lemon juice.
Nelspruit: Orange Restauarant
They’ve got the usual mojitos and juleps, but we love the idea of the Rusty Nail as a shot: equal parts whiskey and Drambuie.
Polokwane: The Deck Lounge
Warm up with their signature coffee blend mixed with booze — Irish Coffee: Whiskey, Kahlua, Frangelico, Amarula and Baileys.
Port Elizabeth: Ginger
The only spirits these cats offer is in dinner entrées, like whisky chili prawns. Pair with a locally sourced bottle of Sauvignon Blanc and you’ve got authentic eats.
Pretoria: Blue Crane Restaurant
Bird watching and scotch sipping go hand-in-hand at this sanctuary. Set down the binoculars and take down the drink with the longest name in history — Slow Comfortable Screw against the Wall with a Kiss: Gin, Vodka, Southern Comfort and Galliano with orange juice. We’ll have two.
Rustenburg: Cape Town Fish Market
This is a sleepy town, perfect for relaxing with an icy cold beer like South African Windhoek Lager. They’ve also got a fully stocked bar with everything from Pimm’s No 1 to Brandy to Sambuca.
